This #BlackAugustAZ we’re studying, uplifting, and memorializing the stories of Black leaders and thinkers! Join us for a month of free, online and in-person events, open to the public, to lift up the stories of Black Liberation, promote solidarity between Black and non-Black Latinx communities in Arizona, and invite folx into tangible abolitionist work happening now! ⁣⁣⁣

WHAT IS BLACK AUGUST?

Picture

This Black August, let's make Black and Black Latinx folx in PHX visible in our lineage of Black Liberation, as we continue to struggle toward a safe Arizona for Black, indigenous, migrant, and Latinx folx.⁣⁣⁣⁣

history of black august

solidarity/ solidaridad: solidarity, intersection, interconnectedness

abolition/ abolición: eliminating imprisonment, policing, and surveillance and creating lasting alternatives to punishment and imprisonment

This Year

commemorate history of struggle/ conmemorar la historia de lucha: memorializing history/genealogy of struggle, commemorating resiliencecelebration/ celebración: celebration, joy, relaxation, lightness

Our partners at Trans Queer Pueblo, Black Lives Matter Phoenix Metro, Poder in Action, and Phoenix Local Organizing Committee for Justice or Else are joining us to commemorate Black August by hosting and sharing a variety of community events! Check out our community calendar and register for events to learn more about the movement in Arizona, across the country and around the world!

Throughout the month

We are invested in renewing a culture of abolition, and a community of abolitionists. Art-making is an important anchor of abolitionism; poetry, music, theatre, drag, and visual art allow us to express the possibilities we imagine. This #BlackAugustAZ, we invite folx to create art that celebrates the history of Black and Latinx resilience and joy. We’re asking folx to share what they make (if you’re comfortable!) on social media with our hashtags #BlackAugustAZ and #BlackAugustAZArt.
